A ship this size gets two pilots. My colleague was on watch. There's a reach of the channel where the rising sun lines up like this.

It's the anchorage just inside the jetties at Galveston. "Roads", as a nautical term, refers to a sheltered place for ships to anchor. It's a shortened form of "roadstead". Named for Simon Bolivar.
